Battle Tactics of the Western Front: The British Army's Art of Attack, 1916-18 Griffith Amazon UK ref: 0300066635 | Amazon US ref: 0300066635 Griffith argues that the First World War was the first modern war because it was fought with high explosives. Contrary to received opinion, British military doctrine after 1916 was advanced and in particular British artillery excelled in the techniques of creeping barrages in close support of infantry attacks and accurate predicted fire. Contrary to Griffith's expressed preference for the anecdotal, this work tends to rely on the evidence of official publications and lacks the immediate eye-witness quality of some of his other works.
